Pad Man is a 2018 Indian biographical comedy drama film directed by R. Balki and written by Balki and Padman co-authors Twinkle Khanna and Akshay Akkineni. The film focuses on the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, inventor of low-cost sanitary pads, who made life easier for women in his rural hometown near Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The social problem of menstrual taboos led to his invention to make low cost sanitary pads women could buy. The film stars Akshay Kumar in the lead role with Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor in supporting roles. The film has been produced by Twinkle Khanna under the banner of "Mrs Funnybones Pictures" along with Amit Saxena's White Feather Films. Pad Man was released worldwide on 26 January 2018. The film received positive response from critics and the audience, becoming one of the highest grossing Hindi films featuring Akshay Kumar in lead role. The movie has won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi at the 63rd National Film Awards. The story revolves around Arunachalam Muruganantham (Akshay Kumar), an engineer who lives in Tamil Nadu with his wife Panchi (Kirti Kulhari) and young daughter. He is a poor man with few resources who had to find a way to support his family. He challenges the myths and taboos surrounding menstruation. His work against menstrual taboos makes him popular and successful, leading him to be one of the richest men in India, despite never owning a single rupee of wealth. Arunachalam's first invention was a mobile sanitary napkin (sari) maker that he developed for his wife Panchi, which allowed her to buy sanitary napkins from stores and not require her husband or anyone else in her family waste money on saris every month. This invention costed him 14 years of experiments and was built as such such as to function as an electric iron (machine). He sold it for Rs.200,000 to a chemist. In 1995, Arunachalam was contacted by a woman from a village near the town of Erode asking about selling coir tampons. This invention by Arunachalam was for women who had difficulties using sari tampons and also to fight the taboos regarding menstrual blood. The result of this invention by him took place in 1996 as India became the first country in Asia to put coir into tampons as well as making them readily available. In 2016, Pad Man was one of the five nominations for the National Film Awards in 2017 for Best Feature Film in Hindi with Akshay Kumar. The film received a Special Mention at 43rd International Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival, Turkey. The film has been released on 26 January 2018 all over India. In advance booking, it showed as a different film from its original name "Pad Man".
